For perfect sliding door installation, we’ve put together these helpful ‘must dos’ to help you out.

What do I need to fit a sliding door?

  • ◉ Pencil & paper
  • ◉ Tape measure
  • ◉ Spirit level
  • ◉ String line
  • ◉ Shims in various sizes
  • ◉ Long handled scraper
  • ◉ Screwdriver
  • ◉ Chisel
  • ◉ Claw hammer
  • ◉ Plastic mallet
  • ◉ Drill
  • ◉ Hand-held circular saw
  • ◉ Crowbar
  • ◉ Silicone
  • ◉ Broom

Fitting a new sliding door cill

  • ◉ Dry fit the cill by temporarily placing shims on the threshold. Make sure the cill is level before carrying on, otherwise the sliding door’s rolling mechanism won’t work correctly.
  • ◉ Once the cill is level, double check the door will have enough height clearance when its installed.
  • ◉ To support the cill, a bed of mortar can be added to the full cill length between the required shims.
  • ◉ Check the level again before fixing the cill into place, spacing fixings no more than 600mm apart.
  • ◉ Pack the top of the door parallel to the cill.

Our top sliding door installation tips

  • ◉ Throughout the installation process, continue to check the door (and its components) are level to avoid potential issues
  • ◉ Use a shield to prevent damaging other parts of the door with screwdrivers or drills
  • ◉ Care should be taken to avoid overtightening the screws, as this could distort the door frame
  • ◉ Shims must be used at either side of each fixing to help prevent distortion
  • ◉ Cover the tops of any fixings with silicone to avoid any water ingress further down the line
  • ◉ When fitting the frame, make sure all thresholds and drainage cover trims have been removed
  • ◉ When you lift the outer frame into the aperture, use shims to loosely pack out the jambs and hold the door in place whilst levelling it
  • ◉ Make sure screws are fully fixed so they don’t interfere with refitting the threshold cover
  • ◉ Outer door jamb fixings should be no closer than 150mm from corners, using fixings spaced no more than 600mm apart with a minimum of 3 fixings per side
  • ◉ Once the door is in place, check is level, plumb and square once again
  • ◉ Always refer to the door installation manual for further guidance.

How do you adjust sliding glass doors?

If any adjustments are required, this can be done on either corner of the bottom sash by adjusting the wheels with a 4mm allen key. Turn the allen key clockwise to lift the door and anti-clockwise to lower the door. Make sure the wheels are adjusted equally to keep the door parallel with the jamb.
