Other than exterior and interior aesthetic enhancement, improving home security is always a top priority when replacing window frames. Old wooden windows tend to be single-glazed, making them easy targets for opportunist intruders. Whereas modern uPVC and aluminium windows are always double glazed, making them much harder to breakthrough.

But what else can indicate secure windows?… Introducing PAS24:2012 security accredited windows.

What does PAS24:2012 mean?

modern aluminium windows

To comply with Approved Document Q of the building regulations on security in new dwellings, PAS24:2012 is an accreditation that’s part of the British Standards system. Short for Publicly Available Specification, it shows that every component used to make the window has been subjected to a series of tests, demonstrating enhanced security performance for your peace of mind.

What makes a window PAS 24 compliant?

PAS 24 is a minimum standard that either fails or passes the window, there are no high or lower grades of security. The standards taken into consideration for PAS24:2012 security accredited windows are:

  • ◉ BS 6375-1: 2009: Performance of windows and doors – weather tightness
  • ◉ BS 6375-2: 2009: Performance of windows and doors – operation and strength characteristics
  • ◉ BS 6375-3: 2009: Performance of windows and doors – additional performance characteristics
  • ◉ BS 6510: 2005: Steel-framed windows and glazed doors
  • ◉ BS 7412: 2007: Specification for windows and door sets made from unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC-U) extruded hollow profiles
  • ◉ BS EN 12608:2003: Unplasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-U) profiles for the fabrication of windows and doors.

How are windows tested against PAS24?

Assessed as a whole, rather than individual components, windows are tested by specialist PAS24 assessors. Designed to highlight flaws and vulnerabilities with the window’s design, the wide range of tests include:

  • ◉ Manipulation testing (window locks, hinges & fasteners)
  • ◉ Manual cutting testing
  • ◉ Mechanical loading testing
  • ◉ Manual infill testing (gaskets, window beading, security devices & infills)
  • ◉ Impact testing
  • ◉ Hardware and cylinder testing

Does PAS 24 require laminated glass?

Windows don’t require laminated glass to comply with PAS24, but they must feature a locking handle. However, Part Q requires new build and replacement windows installed to the Secured By Design specification (SBD) to be fitted with laminated glazing.

What makes a window Secured By Design?

Secured by Design is the initiative from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) that aims to reduce crime through effective environmental design. Home improvement products that qualify to hold this certification are tested to meet the requirements of the Association of Chief Police Officers.
